Toxic Sunscreen Ingredients Banned in Hawaii and Other Countries
With Hawaii lifting restrictions and moving into Tier 4, tourists are returning in waves. However, the island has implemented some changes since re-opening. In January 2021, ingredients found in chemical sunscreens were banned.
Palau, Aruba, Bonaire, some parts of Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Key West also have these bans.
In order to protect the ocean and marine life, the ingredients oxybenzone, and octinoxate are no longer allowed for sale. Because they are normally found together, these two, plus the ingredient octocrylene has also been banned in other countries.
Oxybenzone: is known to bleach the coral reefs and cause birth defects
Octocrylene: this UV filter causes DNA damage to fish and has been found in seafood
Octinoxate: ingredient that causes reproductive harm and affects hormones
In short, it’s chemical sunscreens that are no longer allowed. Physical sunscreen remains the safe option (those made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) Not only for the ocean, but for your health as well!
Chemical sunscreens need to penetrate your skin to offer protection. Physical sunscreens sit on top of the skin, creating a barrier between the sun and you. Yes these sunscreens are known for creating a “white cast,” but brands are getting smarter and tinted ones are available!
